The Çeşme peninsula, at the western tip of İzmir province, packs a lot of variety into a small area: a castle town with a marina, the stone streets of Alaçatı, long sandy beaches and small rocky coves. Deciding which of these you want in your photos is the first step, because in high season moving between them takes longer than the map suggests.
Shooting ideas by location
Alaçatı
Alaçatı is the best-known backdrop on the peninsula. Its old stone houses have pastel shutters, bay windows and doorways framed with bougainvillea, and a row of windmills stands on the rise above the centre. The look is bright, colourful and very recognisable. It is also extremely busy on summer evenings, when the main streets fill with tables and visitors. For clean street frames, start soon after sunrise, when shop fronts are closed but the light is soft and the lanes are empty.
Çeşme town and castle
Çeşme Castle overlooks the harbour and the Greek island of Chios across the strait. The streets around it, the waterfront promenade and the marina give a mix of historic stone and modern yachts. The castle operates as a museum; professional or commercial shoots inside ticketed sites in Türkiye generally require permission, so most sessions use the exterior walls and surrounding streets.
Ilıca and Altınkum
Ilıca has a long beach of pale sand and shallow water, good for family sessions and simple, airy couple portraits. Altınkum, on the south side of the peninsula, has fine sand and clear water with a more open, natural feel. Both are crowded at midday in July and August and far quieter at the start and end of the day.
Coves and Dalyan
Smaller bays such as Ayayorgi have rocky shores and clear water, and Dalyan has a small harbour lined with fish restaurants. Many coves are occupied by beach clubs in season, so access for photography may depend on being a guest or asking permission.
Wind, light and the calendar
Çeşme is windy. That is why Alaçatı bay is a windsurfing centre, and it is something to plan around: light dresses and long hair move beautifully in a breeze but become difficult in a strong one. Sheltered streets are the fallback on gusty days.
The peninsula’s western and northern shores face the sunset. In summer, the usable light for portraits is the hour or two after sunrise and the last two hours of the day. May, June, September and early October are the most comfortable months, with warm weather and thinner crowds. Spring also brings wildflowers and the herb festival season in Alaçatı. Winter is quiet, with many seasonal venues closed, which suits anyone who wants the stone streets without people.
Sessions that work well here
- Couple, engagement and honeymoon shoots in Alaçatı’s streets.
- Wedding portraits and destination wedding coverage at hotels and beach venues.
- Family holiday photos on the sand at Ilıca or Altınkum.
- Fashion, lifestyle and brand content, for which the colourful architecture is popular.
Practical tips
- Alaçatı’s centre is largely pedestrian in the evening and parking nearby is scarce. Allow extra time.
- Houses and boutique hotels are private property. Do not use doorways, steps or courtyards without asking.
- Choose clothing that copes with wind and bring something to secure hair.
- Drone use requires registration and permission; busy beaches and town centres are not places to fly casually.
How to book a photographer in Çeşme
Photographers working here may be based on the peninsula for the season or travel from İzmir. Ask about travel fees and summer availability early, since wedding dates fill quickly. Compare full galleries rather than single images, and look for sessions shot in the same kind of light you will have. A clear written agreement should state the session length, locations, number of edited photos, delivery time, deposit and cancellation terms. If your shoot involves a hotel or beach club, check whether the venue allows outside photographers and whether it charges for access. We have deliberately not quoted prices in this guide: they vary with season, duration and what is delivered, so ask for an itemised quote and compare like with like.
