John Lennon Wall, Prague: History, Rules and Photo Tips

John Lennon Wall, Prague

The John Lennon Wall on Velkopřevorské náměstí in Malá Strana is a memorial graffiti wall to the former Beatle. After his murder in New York in 1980, Lennon became a pacifist hero for young Czechs. His image was painted on this wall opposite the French Embassy, and it was soon joined by political graffiti and Beatles lyrics.

A Short History

In the 1980s, before the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the wall became a place where people expressed their irritation with the communist regime of Gustáv Husák. The authorities painted it over again and again, and the messages always came back. After 1989 it stayed a symbol of free expression, with new layers of paint added almost daily by visitors from all over the world. The wall belongs to the Order of the Knights of Malta, whose Grand Priory stands behind it.

What the Rules Are Today

For years anyone could bring a spray can. In 2019, after vandalism spread to the surrounding buildings and even to Charles Bridge, the wall was closed for a while and repainted by professional artists as an open-air gallery. When it reopened, people soon started writing on it again. Rules about what visitors may add, and with what, have changed since then, so read the signs on site before you write anything. There is no entrance fee; the wall stands on a public square.

Location

The wall is a few minutes from the Malá Strana end of Charles Bridge, reached through Kampa Island and across the small bridge over the Čertovka canal. The nearest tram stops are Hellichova and Malostranské náměstí.

The Lennon Wall in Hong Kong

The idea has travelled. During the protests in Hong Kong, walls covered with colourful notes and messages appeared across the city and were named Lennon Walls after the Prague original.

The Wall Keeps Changing

What I like most is that the wall reacts to the world. During the coronavirus pandemic, when masks were compulsory in public in Prague, Lennon’s portrait got a face mask too.

Photographing the John Lennon Wall

The wall faces a small, tree-shaded square, so the light is soft for most of the day and colours come out well even under cloud. The difficulty is people: from late morning there is a constant line of visitors posing in front of it. Come early in the morning and you can have the whole length to yourself.

A wide lens shows the full wall, but the stronger pictures are usually closer: a portrait against one block of colour, or a detail of lyrics and faces. For couples I stand them a step or two away from the wall and use a longer lens, so the paint becomes a bright, blurred background. Come back on another trip, too, because you will never photograph the same wall twice.
