Amasra is a small Black Sea town in Bartın province built on a peninsula and an island joined by an old stone bridge. Sea on both sides, castle walls running through the houses and green hills behind give it a compact, romantic character that suits couple sessions particularly well. You can cover the main locations on foot in a couple of hours, which leaves time to wait for good light.
Two harbours, two moods
The town has a bay on each side. Büyük Liman, the large harbour to the east, has the long beach, fishing boats and the breakwater. Küçük Liman, the small harbour to the west, is the more intimate of the two and is where people gather in the evening: the sun sets over the sea on this side, with Tavşan Adası, the small “rabbit island”, sitting just offshore. For a sunset session with a sea view, Küçük Liman and the walls above it are the natural choice. For calm morning pictures with boats and soft light, start at Büyük Liman.
Castle, bridge and Boztepe
Amasra’s fortifications date from the Byzantine period and were strengthened by the Genoese; coats of arms can still be seen on the walls. The castle is not a closed monument but a lived-in quarter, with houses, gardens and narrow lanes inside the gates. Arched gateways and stone stairways frame portraits nicely and offer shade at midday.
The Kemere Bridge, a single stone arch, connects the castle quarter to Boztepe. On Boztepe the path leads to an open headland with views back over both harbours and out to sea. The spot known for its wind-bent “weeping tree” is here. This is one of the best places in town for wide, airy couple photos, though it is exposed, and the cliff edges demand care.
The view from above
The postcard picture of Amasra, showing the whole peninsula, both bays and the island, is taken from the Bakacak viewpoint on the road down from Bartın. It works at almost any time of day, and especially in the late afternoon. Since Bakacak is a few kilometres from the centre, plan it as the first or last location and arrange transport.
Streets and details
Between the harbours, the Çekiciler market street is lined with stalls selling carved wooden goods, a long-standing local craft. It is colourful and narrow, better for candid, documentary-style frames than posed portraits, and shopkeepers should be asked before you photograph their displays closely.
Weather and timing
The Black Sea coast is green because it rains, and Amasra’s weather can turn within an hour in any season. Summer is the most settled period and also the most crowded: on weekends and public holidays the town fills with day-trippers, parking is difficult and the promenades are packed by late morning. Some planning helps:
- Choose a weekday if possible, and begin early or shoot into the evening.
- May, June and September offer mild weather with far fewer people.
- Autumn and winter bring dramatic skies and heavy seas. Sessions are shorter but can be very atmospheric.
- Keep a second date in reserve, and bring a light jacket even in July; the sea breeze is cool after sunset.
- Stone steps and rocks are slippery when wet. Wear shoes with grip and change for the photos.
Sessions that suit Amasra
Engagement, honeymoon and anniversary shoots are the most natural fit. Wedding couples from Bartın and neighbouring provinces often come for outdoor photos in their wedding clothes. Families on a seaside break can get a pleasant set of pictures in an hour around the harbour and castle. The museum is a ticketed site, and as elsewhere in Türkiye professional or commercial shoots in museums and ticketed heritage sites generally need permission. Drone flights also require registration and permission.
Booking a photographer
Amasra is small, so photographers may be based in the town, in Bartın or further away in Zonguldak or Karabük. Ask whether travel is charged. Look at full galleries from sessions shot here, including one on a grey day, because overcast light is common and you want to know the results still look good. Agree in writing on duration, locations, number of edited images, delivery time, payment and the plan if rain arrives.
Browse the photographer directory to find photographers on the western Black Sea coast. If you photograph in Amasra, you are welcome to add a free listing. You can also explore more Türkiye photography guides.
