Antakya Photographers: Photo Locations & Wedding Shoot Tips

Any honest guide to photography in Antakya has to begin with February 2023. The earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye destroyed or severely damaged much of the city, including large parts of the historic centre whose stone lanes, courtyard houses, mosques and churches had made it a favourite setting for wedding and travel photography. Thousands of people died, and rebuilding and restoration will take years.

That changes how a photoshoot here should be planned. Older articles and portfolios show streets and buildings that may no longer exist or are closed for restoration. This guide therefore focuses on what to verify, on places in the wider Hatay province, and on working with local photographers who know the current situation.

Check before you plan

  • Ask a photographer based in Hatay what is accessible now. Conditions in the old city change as demolition, restoration and reconstruction continue.
  • Do not assume a landmark you saw in older photos is standing or open.
  • Construction zones and damaged buildings are unsafe and are not backdrops. Keep out of fenced areas.
  • Be sensitive. Ruins here are places where people lost family and homes; styled shoots in front of them are inappropriate.

Settings in and around Antakya

Hatay Archaeology Museum

The museum is known for one of the world’s richest collections of Roman and Byzantine mosaics. It is a place to visit and to understand the city’s past more than a portrait location, and professional shoots in ticketed museums in Türkiye generally need permission. Confirm opening status before you go.

St Pierre Church

This cave church on the mountainside above the city is counted among the oldest Christian places of worship. It operates as a ticketed site, and the hillside around it looks out over the valley. Again, check that it is open, and seek permission for anything beyond casual photos.

Harbiye

South of the city, in the Defne district, Harbiye is a green valley with waterfalls and tall trees, the ancient Daphne. The shade and running water make it a cool, soft-lit choice for couple and family portraits, especially in the hot months.

Samandağ and the coast

On the Mediterranean shore, Samandağ has a very long sandy beach that is ideal for sunset sessions with plenty of space. Nearby, the Titus Tunnel, a Roman water channel cut through rock, and the rock tombs beside it provide dramatic stone walls and shafts of light; this is a ticketed site with uneven ground. The Armenian village of Vakıflı, among citrus orchards, and the ancient plane tree at Hıdırbey are other well-known stops in the area.

Climate and light

Hatay has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and humid, with harsh light from late morning to mid-afternoon; plan outdoor sessions for early morning or the last hours of the day. Spring is green and mild and is the most pleasant season for photography. Autumn stays warm well into the year. Winters are mild but rainy.

Wedding photography in Hatay

Antakya has long been known for its mix of communities and faiths, and for large, warm family weddings. Couples marrying here now often choose natural settings such as Harbiye or the Samandağ coast for portraits, or venues that have reopened. If you are planning from elsewhere, talk through the day with your photographer in detail: which venues are operating, how long travel between locations takes on current roads, and where the portraits can realistically be made.

Drone flights require registration and permission in Türkiye, and Hatay is a border province, so aerial filming needs particular care.

Choosing a photographer

Hiring a photographer from Hatay supports people rebuilding their working lives, and local knowledge matters more here than almost anywhere. Ask to see recent work, made after 2023, so the locations shown are ones you can actually use. Review a full wedding or session gallery, not only highlights. Agree in writing on coverage hours, the number of edited images, delivery time, travel fees if the photographer comes from another city, and the terms for deposits, cancellation and rescheduling.

Our photographer directory can help you find photographers, and those working in Hatay are warmly invited to add a free listing. For other parts of the country, see more Türkiye photography guides.
