Cide Photographers: Nature Locations & Photo Tips

Cide is a small district on the western Black Sea coast of Kastamonu province, a long way from the country’s main tourist routes. Forested hills come down to a pebble shore, the coast road twists between headlands, and the pace of life is slow. There is no checklist of famous monuments here. What Cide offers a photographer is nature: sea, forest, cliffs and weather.

Main locations

Gideros Bay

West of the town, Gideros is a small, almost enclosed bay with a narrow opening to the sea, wooded slopes on all sides and a few simple places to eat by the water. It is the best-known spot in the district and the obvious centrepiece for a session. The viewpoint on the road above shows the whole shape of the bay; down at the shore, the calm water and moored boats give a quieter, closer setting. It becomes busy on summer weekends, and parking is limited.

Cide beach

The town sits behind a very long pebble beach, open to the north. It is wide, uncluttered and easy to reach, which makes it practical for families and for simple couple portraits with sea and sky. On rough days the waves are dramatic; keep a sensible distance from the water.

The coast road

The road along this stretch of the Black Sea, towards Kurucaşile and Amasra in one direction and İnebolu in the other, climbs and drops through forest with frequent views over cliffs and coves. There are many informal stopping points. It is slow driving, so choose one or two rather than trying to cover a long distance.

Forests and valleys inland

The hills behind Cide belong to the Küre Mountains, one of the most heavily forested parts of the country, with villages of traditional wooden houses and valleys such as Loç. These are best explored with someone who knows the roads and current conditions, especially after rain.

Weather, light and seasons

The Black Sea climate is humid and changeable. Rain is possible in any month, cloud is frequent, and the landscape stays green because of it. For portraits this is often an advantage: overcast skies give soft, even light all day, and mist in the hills adds depth. It does mean that a shoot needs a flexible schedule and, ideally, a spare day.

Summer is the most reliable season, with warm temperatures and swimming weather. Autumn brings strong colour to the forests. Spring is fresh and very green. Winter is quiet, cool and wet, and some services along the coast are closed. Since the coast faces roughly north, the sun rises and sets along the shore rather than directly over open sea for much of the year; ask your photographer where the evening light falls at the time of your visit.

Who Cide suits

  • Couples who prefer a natural, unstaged look to a city or resort backdrop.
  • Families on a Black Sea road trip who want relaxed holiday portraits.
  • Local wedding and engagement couples looking for outdoor locations near home.
  • Travellers interested in landscape and outdoor lifestyle images.

Practical tips

  • Bring a waterproof layer and a change of shoes, even in summer.
  • Pebbles, wet rocks and forest paths are slippery. Choose footwear accordingly.
  • Allow plenty of driving time. Distances are short on the map but roads are winding.
  • Mobile coverage can be patchy in the hills, so agree meeting points precisely beforehand.
  • Drone flights require registration and permission, and protected natural areas can have additional rules.
  • Leave no litter and keep to existing paths.

Hiring a photographer for Cide

Cide is a small town, and the choice of photographers based there is limited. You may need to look to Kastamonu, Bartın, Amasra or further afield, in which case travel costs and possibly accommodation will be part of the arrangement. Ask about these openly at the start. Request full galleries of outdoor work in similar conditions, since handling flat grey light and sudden rain well is a skill in itself. Before booking, confirm in writing the date and a fallback date, how long the session will last, which locations are planned, how many edited images you will receive and when, and the deposit and cancellation terms. Ask too whether the photographer has worked at Gideros before and what time of day they would recommend.

Our photographer directory is the place to start looking, and photographers who cover Cide or the wider Kastamonu coast are invited to add a free listing. For more destinations, see more Türkiye photography guides.
