Fethiye Photographers: Best Photo Locations & Booking Tips

Ask ten people what Fethiye looks like and you will get ten different pictures: a turquoise lagoon, a ghost village on a hillside, Lycian tombs cut into a cliff, paragliders drifting off a mountain. All of them are within a short drive of each other, which makes the area one of the most versatile places on the Turkish coast for a photoshoot. The trick is choosing two or three locations that fit your style instead of trying to see everything in one afternoon.

Locations and what they are good for

Ölüdeniz and Babadağ

The lagoon at Ölüdeniz, with its pale sandbar and sheltered blue water, is the image most people have in mind. The lagoon area is a managed nature park with an entrance fee, and the main beach beside it gets very busy in summer. For a wider view, Babadağ rises directly behind the bay; a cable car runs up the mountain, and the terraces near the paragliding take-off points look down on the whole coastline. Light at altitude is clear and strong, and it can be windy and noticeably cooler than the beach.

Kayaköy

Kayaköy is a hillside of roofless stone houses and churches, left empty after the population exchange of 1923. It is quiet, textured and very different in mood from the beaches, which suits couples who want something more thoughtful than a seaside set. The site is ticketed; as at other protected sites in Türkiye, professional or commercial shoots generally require permission, so ask your photographer how they handle this.

Fethiye town

The old town lanes of Paspatur, shaded by umbrellas and vines, are good for casual portraits. Above the town, the Tomb of Amyntas is carved into the rock face and reached by a flight of steps. The marina and promenade work for evening walks with boats in the background.

Çalış Beach

Çalış faces west across the bay and is the simplest place around Fethiye for a sunset session: a long, open beach, a promenade and the sun going down behind the islands.

Further out

Butterfly Valley, reached by boat from Ölüdeniz, and the coves around Faralya and Kabak offer wilder scenery but take real time to reach. Saklıkent Gorge, inland, gives cool canyon walls and rushing water. Boat trips among the islands of the bay are popular for family and honeymoon photos, though space on board is tight.

When to shoot

From June to September the sun is fierce from late morning to mid-afternoon, and the beaches are at their fullest. Sunrise sessions give empty sand and calm water; the last hour before sunset gives warmer colour. May, early June, late September and October are the most comfortable months, with warm sea, softer light and fewer people. Winter is mild and green but rainy, and many boat services and beach facilities shut down.

Practical tips

  • Distances look small on a map but the roads are winding. Leave generous travel time between locations.
  • Kayaköy and the rock tomb involve uneven ground and steps; bring sturdy shoes.
  • The cliff edges above Butterfly Valley are dangerous. No photograph is worth standing near an unprotected drop.
  • Light colours and flowing fabrics stand out against both the blue water and the grey stone of Kayaköy.
  • Drone footage of the lagoon is tempting, but flights require registration and permission, and paragliding traffic makes the airspace around Ölüdeniz particularly sensitive.

Booking a photographer in Fethiye

Many photographers in the area work mainly in the holiday season and are booked through hotels or boat operators. You will usually get better results by contacting a photographer directly and looking carefully at their work first. Ask for a full gallery from a single session, ideally at the location you want. Then clarify: how long the session lasts, whether transport and any entrance fees are included, how many edited images you receive, the delivery time, and what happens if wind or weather forces a change. A simple written agreement protects both sides.
