A medieval castle standing on its own islet a few hundred metres off a sandy beach: Kızkalesi, in the Erdemli district of Mersin, has one image that defines it, and nearly every photo session here is built around it. The name means “Maiden’s Castle”, and the fortress has a twin on the shore, the land castle of ancient Korykos. Add a coastline dotted with Roman and Byzantine remains and you have an unusual setting for wedding couples and travellers alike.
Working with the sea castle
From the main beach the castle sits low on the horizon, so composition matters. A longer lens brings it closer behind a couple; a wide lens makes it a small detail in a big sky. Photographers who know the bay will move along the sand to line it up properly rather than shooting from wherever the sunbeds end.
Boats and pedalos take visitors across to the islet in season. Photos inside the walls, with the sea visible through arches, are possible, but getting there in a wedding dress with equipment takes planning, and a castle that charges entry is subject to the usual rule in Türkiye: professional or commercial shoots at ticketed heritage sites generally need permission. Many couples choose to keep the castle as a background and stay on the beach.
When the light is good
This is one of the hottest and most humid stretches of the Turkish coast in summer. Early morning is the most comfortable time and often the most attractive, with low sun on the water and the castle walls and very few people on the sand. Late afternoon to dusk is the alternative; the beach is busier, but the light softens and the castle is lit after dark, which allows a few atmospheric night frames. Midday in July or August is hard on people, make-up and cameras alike.
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for a longer session. Winters are mild, and the beach is nearly empty.
Other locations within reach
- Korykos land castle: thick walls and towers right beside the beach, useful for shade and stone textures.
- Cennet and Cehennem: the “Heaven and Hell” sinkholes above Narlıkuyu are dramatic, though the long stairway into Cennet is demanding in formal clothes.
- Narlıkuyu: a small cove with fish restaurants and a Roman mosaic of the Three Graces.
- Elaiussa Sebaste and Kanlıdivane: ruins at Ayaş and a large sinkhole ringed by ancient buildings, both a short drive east.
- Adamkayalar: rock-cut reliefs on a canyon wall inland. The path is steep and exposed, so treat it as a hike, not a portrait location.
Several of these are ticketed or protected sites. Check access and permission before promising yourself a particular picture.
Beach wedding photos
Most “beach wedding” sessions in Kızkalesi are outdoor shoots before or after the ceremony, done in wedding clothes on the sand. Some hotels along the bay host receptions with a sea view. A few things help the day go smoothly:
- Choose a dress you can walk in on sand and that tolerates a wet hem. Bring flat shoes.
- Humidity affects hair and make-up; ask your stylist for a finish that lasts and carry blotting paper.
- Schedule the session for early morning on a weekday if you can. Summer weekends bring large crowds from Mersin and Adana.
- Have water, a towel and an umbrella or parasol for shade between shots.
Travel portraits
For visitors passing along the Mersin coast, a one-hour portrait session at the beach and the land castle is a simple way to bring home better pictures than phone selfies. Tell the photographer what you will actually do with the images, whether prints, an album or social media, so framing and delivery match.
Finding and booking a photographer
Kızkalesi is small, and many photographers who work here are based in Erdemli, Silifke or Mersin city. Ask about travel fees. Request full galleries from sessions shot at this beach so you can see how they handle haze, harsh sun and crowds. Then put the agreement in writing: time and place, duration, number of edited images, delivery date, payment schedule and a backup plan for bad weather. If you want drone footage of the castle, the pilot needs to be registered and to hold the necessary flight permission.
Search our photographer directory for photographers in Mersin and along the Mediterranean, and if you are one of them, add a free listing. For other regions, see more Türkiye photography guides.
