Photographers in Alanya: Beach, Castle & Sunset Shoot Guide

Alanya is built around a single dramatic feature: a rocky peninsula that pushes out into the Mediterranean with a Seljuk castle on top and long beaches on either side. For a photoshoot this is very convenient. Within a few kilometres you have medieval walls, a working harbour, pale sand and open sea, so one session can cover several looks without much driving.

Locations that work well on camera

Alanya Castle and the peninsula

The castle walls run for kilometres along the ridge, and the road up passes old houses, small terraces and gaps in the fortifications where the coastline opens out below. The upper lanes give you stone, wooden doors and bougainvillea; the viewpoints give you the classic picture of the beach curving away towards the Taurus Mountains. The inner citadel at the top is a ticketed site, so professional or commercial shoots there generally need permission arranged in advance. Many photographers simply use the public streets and terraces on the way up, which are just as photogenic.

The Red Tower and the harbour

The octagonal Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) stands at the foot of the peninsula beside the harbour, with the old Seljuk shipyard a short walk along the shore. The brick of the tower warms up nicely in low light, and the harbour adds boats and reflections.

Cleopatra Beach

West of the peninsula, Cleopatra Beach faces the setting sun and has the castle rock as a backdrop at its eastern end. This is the obvious choice for sunset couple portraits, engagement sessions and family photos with children running along the waterline. The cable car that climbs towards the castle starts near this end of the beach, which makes it easy to combine sand and heights in one outing.

Beyond the town

If you want green instead of blue, the Dim River valley east of the centre has shaded riverside spots and cool water, and Sapadere Canyon further inland offers wooden walkways between rock walls. Both are a good answer to the midday heat, though they add travel time.

Light, heat and timing

Summer in Alanya is hot and humid, and the sun is harsh from late morning until late afternoon. Sessions are usually planned for the first hour or two after sunrise or the last two hours before sunset. Sunrise suits the eastern beach and the harbour side; sunset belongs to Cleopatra Beach and the western walls of the castle.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with warm sea, softer light and fewer people on the sand. Winter is mild and often clear, and snow on the Taurus peaks behind the town can appear in the background of wide shots.

What kind of session suits Alanya?

  • Couples and honeymoon portraits: castle viewpoints followed by a beach sunset.
  • Wedding and post-wedding shoots: the stone lanes of the peninsula handle formal dress well, and the beach works for a relaxed second set.
  • Family holiday photos: the beach in the early evening, when children are happiest and the light is kind.
  • Travel portraits: the harbour, the Red Tower and the old streets above them.

Practical notes

  • Bring water and a change of top in summer; humidity shows quickly in photos.
  • Light, loose fabrics move well in the sea breeze. Carry flat shoes for the castle’s cobbles even if you plan to be photographed in heels.
  • The castle road is steep and narrow. Allow extra time for traffic or use the cable car.
  • Drone flights in Türkiye require registration and permission, so check with your photographer before assuming aerial shots are included.

Choosing a photographer in Alanya

Ask to see complete galleries from sessions shot in Alanya, not only a handful of highlights. A full gallery shows how someone handles strong sun, crowded beaches and the quick change of light at dusk. Before paying a deposit, agree in writing on the session length, the number of edited images, the delivery time and whether transport between locations or travel to places such as Sapadere is charged separately. In high season the best sunset slots are taken early, so contact photographers well ahead of your trip and tell them where you are staying, since the resort strip stretches a long way along the coast.
