Bitez is a bay a short drive west of Bodrum town, on the south side of the peninsula. Compared with its neighbours it is calm: a curved beach with shallow, sheltered water, a walkway along the shore lined with cafés and small hotels, and behind them the mandarin groves the area is known for. It suits people who want beach photos without the noise of a large resort.

What Bitez looks like on camera

The beach and walkway

The bay is enclosed by low hills on both sides, so the sea is usually flat and the colours are soft. Wooden jetties, sunbeds, moored boats and windsurf sails provide detail. In high season much of the sand is taken up by loungers belonging to the beach businesses; the clearest frames come soon after sunrise, before they fill, or at the ends of the bay.

Mandarin groves

The flat land behind the beach is planted with citrus trees. In spring the blossom scents the whole village, and in winter the fruit ripens on the branches. The groves give a green, shaded alternative to the open beach. They are private orchards, so shoot from the lanes or ask the owner before going in.

The village

Bitez village sits inland from the beach, with older stone houses, garden walls and quiet streets. It is a useful second location when you want something that does not look like a holiday resort.

The headlands

Paths and roads on the slopes at either side of the bay look back over the water and the groves. They are good for wider scenes late in the day.

Adding nearby locations

Bitez Bay opens to the south, so the sun does not set directly over the water there for most of the year. If a sunset over the sea is important, combine Bitez with a west-facing spot elsewhere on the peninsula. Options within a reasonable drive include:

  • The windmills on the ridge between Bodrum and Gümbet, with views over both bays.
  • Bodrum’s old town and harbour, with white houses, bougainvillea and the castle. The castle houses a museum, and professional shoots inside ticketed sites generally require permission.
  • Gümüşlük, on the western tip, known for sunsets and its waterside setting.

Summer traffic on the peninsula is slow, so do not plan more than two areas in one session.

Season and light

The season runs from roughly May to October. July and August are hot, bright and crowded, and sessions are best kept to early morning or the last ninety minutes of daylight. May, June, September and October are gentler in every respect. In winter the bay is very quiet and many businesses close, but the weather is mild, the groves are full of fruit and the light is low and clear on good days.

Whitewashed buildings and pale sand reflect a lot of light, which helps fill shadows on faces. An afternoon breeze is common, which is why the bay is popular with windsurfers, though it is gentler here than on the exposed side of the peninsula.

Sessions that suit the bay

  • Couple and honeymoon shoots: barefoot on the sand at sunrise, or on a jetty in the evening.
  • Proposals: the quieter ends of the beach or a hotel terrace.
  • Family holiday portraits: the shallow water is well suited to small children.
  • Wedding and pre-wedding photos: often at beachfront hotels and restaurants.

Practical tips

  • Jetties and sunbed areas belong to businesses. Ask before using them, or arrange the session where you are staying.
  • Light, loose clothing in pale or warm tones works well against sea and sand; bring a layer for the breeze after sunset.
  • Drone flights require registration and permission, and crowded beaches are not suitable places to fly.

Choosing and booking a photographer

Photographers working in Bitez are generally based around the Bodrum peninsula, and many are fully booked for weddings in peak months, so enquire early. Ask to see full sessions from beach locations, at the time of day you are considering, to judge how they handle bright sand and backlight. Confirm whether travel within the peninsula, a second location or any venue fee is included. A written agreement should set out the session length, number of edited images, delivery time, deposit, and what happens if wind or weather forces a change.
