An hour or so north of İzmir, Foça has kept the scale of a fishing town. Stone houses with painted shutters line two small bays, fishing boats are moored a few steps from the café tables, and the offshore islands are protected habitat for the Mediterranean monk seal that appears on the town’s emblem. It is a calm, unhurried setting for a photoshoot, and very different in mood from the busier resorts further south.

Eski Foça and Yeni Foça

Two settlements share the name. Eski Foça (Old Foça) is the main town, on the site of ancient Phokaia. Yeni Foça, further north along the coast, is smaller, with its own streets of old stone houses and a quiet seafront. Make sure you and your photographer mean the same place when you agree a meeting point; the two are a drive apart.

Locations worth planning around

  • Küçükdeniz harbour: the smaller of Eski Foça’s two bays, ringed by fish restaurants and restored houses. Early morning brings still water, fishermen sorting nets and almost empty quays.
  • The back streets: cobbled lanes behind the waterfront with stone facades, coloured doors and climbing plants. They are shaded for much of the day and work well for relaxed portraits.
  • Beşkapılar and the castle walls: the fortification on the headland between the two bays gives texture and a sense of age, with sea on both sides.
  • The windmills: the old windmills on the hill above town look out over the bays and islands and are a good choice for late-afternoon light.
  • Coves along the coast road: the drive between Eski Foça and Yeni Foça passes a series of small bays with clear water and rocky shores. Access varies, and some stretches of coast in the district are military or protected areas, so rely on local knowledge rather than a map pin.

Light, wind and seasons

Foça faces west, so sunsets fall over the sea and the islands. In summer the afternoon sea breeze can be strong, which helps with the heat but affects hair, veils and loose fabric. Plan styling with that in mind. The harbour is usually calmer in the morning.

Spring is green, mild and quiet. Summer weekends bring many visitors from İzmir, and the waterfront becomes crowded in the evening. September and October offer warm sea and softer light. In winter the town is very quiet, and clear days after rain can be excellent for moody, low-season images.

What kind of shoot suits Foça?

The town’s strength is atmosphere rather than monuments. It suits couple sessions, engagement and save-the-date photos, relaxed family portraits and travel-style images that include boats, tables by the water and everyday street life. Wedding couples from İzmir often choose it for outdoor portraits. Boat trips around the islands run in season and can be added to a session, though swimming and landing are restricted in places because of the protected status of the area.

Practical points

  • Park outside the centre on busy days and walk in; the old streets are narrow.
  • Cobblestones are uneven. Bring comfortable shoes for moving between spots.
  • Restaurants and private houses are part of the scenery, but ask before using someone’s doorway or table as a set.
  • Drone flights require registration and permission, and restrictions are stricter near military zones. Leave this to a pilot who knows the local rules.
  • If you want to photograph inside a managed archaeological area or museum, professional shoots generally need permission in advance.

Hiring a photographer in Foça

Many photographers who cover Foça are based in İzmir, so ask whether travel is included in the fee. Look through complete galleries, not only selected favourites, and check that the editing style is consistent from start to finish. Useful questions to ask before you book:

  • How long is the session, and how many locations does it realistically cover?
  • How many edited images are delivered, in what format, and by when?
  • Is there a written agreement covering deposit, cancellation and rescheduling for weather?
  • Have you photographed in Foça at this time of year, and what time would you start?

A photographer who knows the town will usually suggest a route on foot: harbour, lanes, castle walls, then the windmills or a west-facing shore for sunset.

Our photographer directory is a good starting point for finding someone, and photographers who work in Foça or İzmir can add a free listing there. For other destinations, see more Türkiye photography guides.
