Kaş is a small harbour town on the Lycian coast of Antalya province, built on a slope that drops straight into clear, deep water. The Greek island of Meis sits a short distance offshore, the Taurus foothills rise directly behind the houses, and Lycian tombs turn up in the middle of ordinary streets. For a photoshoot that mixes sea, old stone and a relaxed town atmosphere, it is one of the most rewarding places on the south coast.
Where to shoot in and around Kaş
The old town lanes
The streets above the harbour are lined with whitewashed houses, wooden balconies and bougainvillea. Uzun Çarşı, the sloping street that climbs from the square, ends at the Lion Tomb, a tall Lycian sarcophagus that makes a natural focal point. These lanes are narrow and shaded for much of the day, which gives soft, even light for portraits when the sun is harsh elsewhere.
The Antiphellos theatre
A short walk west of the centre, the Hellenistic theatre faces the sea and the island of Meis. It is the classic sunset location in Kaş: the stone seating warms in colour as the sun drops and the water behind turns pale gold. It is also where much of the town gathers at dusk, so arrive early or plan for other people in the wider frames.
Çukurbağ Peninsula and the harbour
The peninsula road west of town has open views back towards Kaş and out to sea, with rocky shoreline rather than sand. The harbour itself, with wooden gulets and fishing boats, works well in the first hour after sunrise, before the day boats leave.
Kaputaş and Kekova
Kaputaş Beach, on the coast road towards Kalkan, lies at the mouth of a narrow gorge and is reached by a long flight of steps. The turquoise colour of the water shows best when the sun is high, but the beach is very busy in summer and parking along the road is limited. A boat trip to the Kekova area, with the partly submerged ruins and the hilltop castle village of Kaleköy (Simena), suits couples who want something different from a land-based session.
Light and seasons
From June to September Kaş is hot and bright, and midday light is hard on skin tones and uncomfortable to work in. Most sessions in summer are scheduled for the last two hours before sunset or shortly after sunrise. May, early June, late September and October give warm sea, softer light and fewer visitors. Winter is quiet and mild, with occasional heavy rain and dramatic skies; many seasonal businesses close, but the town itself remains photogenic.
Sessions that suit Kaş
- Couple and honeymoon shoots in the old town followed by sunset at the theatre.
- Proposals on the peninsula or on a private boat.
- Small weddings and elopements, often at hotels or terraces with a sea view.
- Family holiday portraits, best kept short and timed for early evening.
- Adventure-style images built around boat days, sea kayaking near Kekova or walks on the Lycian Way.
Practical notes
- Streets are steep and cobbled. Bring flat shoes for walking between locations even if you change for the photos.
- The theatre and the Lion Tomb are open public monuments; treat them with care and do not climb on fragile stonework.
- Ticketed archaeological sites and museums in Türkiye generally require permission for professional or commercial shoots. If you want to include a managed site in the region, raise this with your photographer well in advance.
- Drone flights require registration and, depending on the area, permission. Do not assume a photographer can fly anywhere along the coast.
Choosing and booking a photographer
Kaş is small, and some photographers who work here are based in Kalkan, Fethiye or Antalya. Ask whether a travel fee applies and whether it is included in the quote. Request at least one complete gallery from a real session, ideally shot in Kaş in the same season, rather than judging from a handful of highlights. Before paying a deposit, get the essentials in writing: session length, number of edited images, delivery time, cancellation and bad-weather terms, and how the photographs may be used.
To compare options, browse our photographer directory; photographers working in Kaş are welcome to add a free listing. You can also read more Türkiye photography guides for ideas elsewhere along the coast.
