Borçka Karagöl Photographers: Nature Photo Spots & Tips

Borçka Karagöl is a small mountain lake in Artvin province, in the far north-east of Türkiye, formed when a landslide blocked a stream and now surrounded by dense mixed forest. It is protected as a nature park. There are no monuments or streets here: the subject is water, trees, mist and whatever the weather decides to do. That simplicity is why landscape photographers love it and why it also works for quiet, atmospheric portraits.

A note on names: Artvin has another well-known Karagöl near Şavşat. This guide is about the one above Borçka, so make sure you and your photographer mean the same lake.

What you can photograph

Reflections from the shore

On a still morning the lake mirrors the forested slopes almost perfectly. The classic view is from the shore near the arrival area, looking across the water to the trees. Wind usually picks up later in the day and breaks the reflection, so early hours matter.

The lakeside path

A walking trail follows the shore through the forest. Along it you find mossy trunks, ferns, small openings to the water and soft, filtered light, all good for couple portraits and for close, detailed nature shots.

Mist and fog

The eastern Black Sea region is among the wettest parts of the country. Low cloud often drifts across the lake and through the treetops. Photographers tend to prefer these conditions to a clear blue sky, because fog separates the layers of forest and gives depth to the scene.

Seasons

  • Autumn. The best-known season. The deciduous trees among the evergreens turn yellow, orange and red, usually around October, though timing shifts from year to year. Weekends in this period are busy.
  • Spring and early summer. Fresh, saturated greens and fuller streams, with frequent rain.
  • Summer. The most reliable access and the most visitors. The forest is a uniform deep green.
  • Winter. Snow can make the scene spectacular, but the mountain road is often difficult or closed. Do not plan a winter session without current local information.

Getting there and other practical matters

The lake lies up a mountain road from the town of Borçka. The drive takes time, the upper section is narrow and winding, and conditions change with the weather. Allow a full half-day at minimum, and more if you want both morning and afternoon light.

  • Bring waterproof layers and shoes with grip. Rain can arrive quickly and paths get muddy.
  • Facilities at the lake are basic and seasonal. Carry water, snacks and a change of clothes.
  • Mobile coverage can be patchy, so agree on meeting arrangements beforehand.
  • It is a protected area: stay on the paths, take your rubbish with you and do not disturb vegetation for the sake of a frame.
  • Drone flights need registration and permission anywhere in Türkiye. This area is also close to the Georgian border, which adds sensitivity, so check carefully before flying.

Sessions that work here

Engagement and couple shoots with a calm, natural mood are the best fit. Earthy or warm-toned clothing stands out against the green; a mustard, rust or deep red coat is especially effective in fog. Wedding dresses are possible but demanding on wet ground, so bring something to protect the hem. For families, the short walk along the shore is manageable with children, though the long drive is tiring for small ones.

Many visitors combine the lake with other places in Artvin, such as the valleys and villages of the Macahel area further up near the border, which makes a multi-day photo trip worthwhile.

Finding a photographer

Few photographers are based in Borçka itself. Most who work here come from Artvin, Hopa, Rize or Trabzon, or travel with clients from larger cities. That makes logistics part of the booking conversation:

  • Who provides transport, and are travel fees or accommodation extra?
  • Has the photographer shot at this lake before, in the same season? Ask to see a full gallery.
  • What is the plan if heavy rain or a closed road makes the lake unreachable?
  • How many edited images will be delivered, and by what date?

Record the answers in a simple written agreement, along with deposit and cancellation terms.

Our photographer directory lists photographers by region, and photographers working in the eastern Black Sea are welcome to add a free listing. You will find more Türkiye photography guides on the site as well.
