Odunpazarı is the historic quarter of Eskişehir, set on a slope above the modern city. Its name means “wood market”, and its streets are lined with restored Ottoman-era timber houses painted in pastel pinks, yellows, greens and blues, their upper floors projecting over the pavement on wooden brackets. Add a strong arts scene and a large student population, and you have one of the most cheerful places in central Anatolia to be photographed.
Streets and corners worth knowing
The painted houses
The curving lanes of the old quarter are the main attraction. Rows of bay-windowed houses create repeating lines and blocks of colour that work beautifully behind a portrait. Because the streets bend and climb, you can find both sunlit and shaded sides at almost any hour.
Kurşunlu Mosque complex
This sixteenth-century Ottoman complex, with its domes, courtyard and arcades, gives a calmer, more classical setting. Craft workshops operate within the complex. It is a place of worship, so dress modestly, avoid prayer times and keep the session discreet.
Atlıhan and the craft workshops
Eskişehir is the home of meerschaum, a soft white stone carved into pipes and ornaments, and the Atlıhan bazaar is where many carvers have their shops. The courtyard and the craftsmen at work add character to a travel or documentary-style session. Ask before you photograph people or their work.
The museum quarter
The Odunpazarı Modern Museum, a building of stacked timber beams, has become a landmark of the district, and its exterior and the steps around it suit contemporary, editorial-style portraits. Nearby are museums devoted to glass art and other crafts. Museum interiors have their own rules, and professional or commercial photography inside generally needs permission in advance. The public street outside is the simpler option.
Down in the city
If you have time, the Porsuk River in the centre, with its bridges, boats and café-lined banks, makes a good second location, as do the city’s large landscaped parks. They show the modern, relaxed side of Eskişehir and balance the historic frames.
Light and seasons on the plateau
Eskişehir has a continental climate. Winters are cold, and snow on the coloured houses makes for striking photos, though you will want warm layers and short bursts outdoors. Spring arrives late and brings blossom and clear air. Summers are warm and dry, with strong midday sun but pleasant mornings and evenings. Autumn is mild, and the light turns golden early.
The pastel walls act as natural reflectors, so even on overcast days skin tones stay bright. For the cleanest streets, shoot on a weekday morning. Weekends and school holidays bring many day-trippers, and tour groups arrive from late morning.
Sessions that suit Odunpazarı
- Graduation portraits: Eskişehir is a university city, and the old quarter is a classic choice for gown-and-cap photos.
- Engagement and save-the-date shoots: the colours give a playful, light mood.
- Wedding portraits: white dresses stand out strongly against the painted façades.
- Family and travel portraits: short distances and plenty of cafés make it easy with children.
- Fashion and personal branding: the timber museum and the modern street furniture offer a different look from the historic lanes.
What to wear and bring
With so much colour behind you, simple outfits work best. White, cream, denim and single strong colours all read clearly; busy prints tend to compete with the houses. The streets are cobbled and sloping, so bring comfortable shoes. In winter, hand warmers and a thermos are worth the bag space.
How to choose and book a photographer
Eskişehir has a healthy community of photographers, many of whom know Odunpazarı street by street. When comparing them, ask for complete galleries from recent sessions in the district, not only the best single frames. Check that the editing style matches what you want: some favour bright, saturated colour, others a softer film-like look. Agree in writing on the session length, number of locations, how many edited images you will get, delivery time, payment terms and the plan if it rains or snows. If you want to include the riverside or a park as well as the old quarter, mention it early so transport and time are accounted for.
