Bozcaada is a small Aegean island off the coast of Çanakkale, reached by ferry from Geyikli. It has one town, a castle on the harbour, low hills covered in vineyards and a handful of beaches. Everything is close together, which means a photoshoot can move from cobbled lanes to open countryside to the sea within a single late afternoon.
The old town
The town is the heart of most sessions. Its streets are lined with stone and whitewashed houses, coloured shutters, and vines trained overhead from one side of the lane to the other. Café tables spill onto the cobbles, and in summer the doorways are full of flowers. The lanes are shaded and intimate, ideal for couple portraits and relaxed lifestyle photos.
They are also narrow and popular. By mid-morning in July and August they fill with visitors, so the best time for clean frames is shortly after sunrise, when the light is soft and shop owners are just setting out their chairs. Remember that these are people’s homes and businesses: ask before using a doorway or a café table as a prop.
The castle and harbour
Bozcaada Castle stands right beside the ferry landing and dominates the harbour. Its walls make a strong backdrop from the quayside and from the small beach next to it, with fishing boats in the foreground. Entry to the castle is ticketed, and a professional or commercial shoot inside generally needs permission, so most portraits are taken from outside the walls.
Vineyards and the countryside
Wine growing has shaped the island for a very long time, and the interior is a patchwork of low bush vines, dry-stone walls and dirt tracks. The vines are green from late spring and heavy with grapes towards the end of summer, when the harvest takes place. Vineyards are private agricultural land. Shoot from the tracks unless you have the owner’s permission, and never pick or damage the fruit.
Sunset at the western tip
At the far western end of the island, near the Polente lighthouse and the line of wind turbines, the land ends in open sea. Watching the sunset here is an island ritual, and it is the natural finale for a couple session. Expect company on summer evenings and arrive early to choose your spot. It is nearly always windy.
Beaches
Ayazma, on the south coast, is the best-known beach, with clear, cool water and a wide stretch of sand. Smaller coves along the same shore are quieter. Beach photos work best in the morning or early evening, when the light is lower and sunbeds are empty.
Wind, weather and season
- The island is windy for much of the year. Choose hairstyles that survive a breeze and fabrics that look good in motion.
- June and September are the sweet spot: warm, bright and less crowded than midsummer.
- July and August bring heavy crowds and full ferries, especially at weekends and during the grape harvest festivities.
- Outside the season many businesses close, the island becomes very quiet and ferry sailings can be disrupted by rough weather.
Getting there with a photographer
If you bring a car in summer, check ferry arrangements in advance, as queues can be long. Many visitors leave the car on the mainland and get around on foot, by minibus or by rented bicycle or scooter. Tell your photographer how you plan to move around so the route is realistic. If you would like aerial pictures of the coastline, bear in mind that drones need registration and permission in Türkiye.
Choosing and booking
Only a few photographers live on the island; many come over from Çanakkale, İstanbul or İzmir for the season or for specific bookings. Ask whether ferry tickets, travel time and an overnight stay are part of the price. Review complete galleries, preferably from Bozcaada itself, to see how the photographer handles tight streets and strong wind. Then confirm the details in a written agreement: duration, number of edited photos, delivery time, deposit and what happens if the ferry is cancelled or the weather turns. For weddings and for late summer dates, book months ahead.
