Náplavka in Winter: Photographing Prague’s Vltava Riverbank

Náplavka in Winter

Náplavka is the most attractive and liveliest place on the banks of the Vltava in downtown Prague. The name simply means the riverside quay: the low stone embankment that runs along the water below street level. The best-known stretch lies on the Rašín Embankment in the New Town, between Jirásek Bridge and the railway bridge at Výtoň. People come here to walk, cycle, sit by the water and feed the swans, and those who come get beautiful panoramas of the river, the bridges and Prague Castle on the hill.

What to expect

In the warmer months Náplavka is one long open-air meeting place, with boats moored along the quay serving as bars and cafes, and a popular farmers’ market on Saturdays. The old storage vaults in the embankment wall have been converted into small cafes, galleries and studios with distinctive round glass doors. In winter it is a different place: quiet, almost empty on weekday mornings, with swans and gulls on the water and low sun over the river. That is exactly why I like to photograph it in the cold season.

How to get there

Trams run along the embankment; the stops Palackého náměstí and Výtoň are both right above the quay, and Karlovo náměstí on metro line B is a few minutes away. Ramps and steps lead down to the water. From here you can walk north along the river to the Dancing House, the National Theatre and on to Charles Bridge and the Old Town Bridge Tower, or south to Vyšehrad.

  • Light. The quay faces west, so morning light falls on the opposite bank and on Prague Castle, while the afternoon sun shines straight along the water and sets behind the hills across the river. Winter sunsets come early and are often the most colourful of the year.
  • Mist and snow. On cold mornings mist rises from the river and softens the bridges. Fresh snow on the cobbles rarely lasts long, so go out early.
  • Subjects. Swans at the water’s edge, the iron railway bridge, the round doors of the vaults, the moored boats and the castle in the distance. A standard zoom covers almost everything; a longer lens helps to bring the castle and the towers closer.
  • Portraits. The wide, empty quay and the soft winter light make it a good place for couple and solo sessions. Dress warmly: the wind off the river is colder than in the streets above.
  • Crowds. Summer evenings and Saturday market mornings are crowded. In winter you will often have long stretches to yourself.
