About a hundred kilometres west of Ankara, Beypazarı is known for its restored Ottoman-era houses, its old market streets and a handful of local specialities: carrots and carrot juice, hard dry rusks known as Beypazarı kurusu, mineral water and fine silver filigree work called telkari. It is one of the most popular day trips from the capital, and that combination of traditional architecture and street life gives a photoshoot plenty to work with.
Why photograph here
The appeal of Beypazarı is its townscape. The historic houses are typically two or three storeys, with white plastered walls, dark timber frames and upper floors that project over the street on wooden brackets. Seen together on a slope, they form a consistent, graphic background that reads clearly in photographs. Add copper and silver workshops, stalls of dried vegetables and tarhana, and women selling homemade produce, and the result is a setting with a strong local identity.
Key spots
The old bazaar and Alaaddin Street
The market area at the heart of the old town is where the craft shops and food stalls are concentrated. The lanes are narrow and lively, with awnings, shop signs and goods displayed outside. This is the place for documentary-style frames and for portraits that include the atmosphere of the town.
Streets of restored houses
Uphill from the bazaar, quieter residential streets are lined with restored mansions, several of which operate as museums, restaurants or guesthouses. The Living Museum, set in one of the old houses, presents local traditions. Interiors are private or managed spaces, so permission is needed for any organised shoot inside.
Hıdırlık Hill
The hill above the town is the standard viewpoint, looking down over tiled roofs and white facades to the valley beyond. It is best late in the afternoon, when side light picks out the shapes of the houses, and it makes a natural closing location after a walk through the streets.
İnözü Valley
On the edge of town, the valley has steep rock faces and greenery along the stream, and offers a change from the built-up streets for couples who want a natural backdrop as well.
Timing and light
Beypazarı has a continental climate: hot, dry summers and cold winters with occasional snow, which looks striking on the white houses and timber frames. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the hilly streets.
Weekends matter more than seasons. Tour buses and cars from Ankara fill the bazaar on Saturdays and Sundays, particularly around midday. For portraits without crowds, come on a weekday or start early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. In the narrow streets the white walls bounce light into the shade, giving soft, flattering conditions even when the sun is high.
Sessions that fit the town
- Engagement and save-the-date shoots for couples from Ankara.
- Wedding portraits in traditional or modern dress against the old houses.
- Family sessions combined with a day out and lunch.
- Travel and street portraits with a documentary feel.
- Product and craft photography for local artisans.
Things to keep in mind
- Streets are steep and paved with stone. Flat shoes are sensible for moving around.
- Ask shopkeepers and stallholders before photographing them or using their displays as a backdrop; most are welcoming when asked.
- People live in many of the historic houses. Keep noise down and avoid blocking doorways.
- Museums and managed sites generally need permission for professional photography.
- Drone flights require registration and permission, and flying over a busy town centre is not appropriate without them.
Booking a photographer for Beypazarı
Because the town is a day trip from Ankara, many couples bring a photographer from the city. Ask whether travel time and transport are included in the quote and how long the photographer plans to spend on location. Review entire galleries to see how they handle mixed light in narrow streets and how natural their direction of people looks. Agree the essentials in writing before paying a deposit: date, hours, number of edited images, delivery time, and terms for cancellation or bad weather. If you have a particular house, café or courtyard in mind, confirm who will arrange permission.
