Photographers in Side, Antalya: Engagement & Family Shoots

Few resort towns in Türkiye have Roman ruins standing in the middle of everyday life the way Side does. The old town occupies a small peninsula between two long sandy beaches, and you walk past a theatre, an agora and fallen columns on the way to the harbour. For engagement sessions and family photos this means a lot of variety within a short walk, as long as you plan around the heat and the crowds.

The main backdrops

Temple of Apollo

The re-erected white columns at the tip of the peninsula are the image most people associate with Side. They stand right by the sea and face the evening sun, so sunset here is the classic choice. It is also when the area is at its busiest. If you want the columns without a crowd behind you, a sunrise session is far calmer: the light is softer, the temperature is bearable and you will mostly share the place with fishermen and joggers.

Old town streets and harbour

The lanes of the peninsula mix stone houses, garden walls and fragments of ancient masonry. They work well for relaxed walking shots and for families, since children can move around rather than pose. The small harbour with its excursion boats adds colour, and the seafront promenade gives open views along the coast.

The theatre, agora and colonnaded street

Side’s Roman theatre is one of the largest in the region, and the approach road passes the monumental gate and long rows of columns. Some of these remains are in open public space; others, including the theatre and the museum housed in the Roman baths, are ticketed. In Türkiye, professional or commercial shoots inside ticketed archaeological sites and museums generally require permission in advance, so do not assume a formal engagement session can simply walk in. A local photographer should know what is currently allowed.

East and West beaches

Both beaches are wide and sandy. The western side catches the sunset; the eastern side is better at sunrise and tends to be quieter. For family photos, sand and shallow water are often easier than ruins, especially with toddlers.

Day trips that add something different

Manavgat Waterfall is a short drive inland and gives a green, shaded alternative on hot days, though it is popular with tour groups. The Roman theatre at Aspendos, further west towards Antalya, is remarkably well preserved; the same permission rules for professional work apply there.

Season and timing

Side has long, hot summers. From late June to early September, midday shooting is uncomfortable and unflattering, so sessions cluster in the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. Spring and autumn give more flexibility and softer light through the day. Winter is mild and very quiet; some businesses in the old town close, but the ruins and the beaches are almost empty, which suits couples who want space.

Practical notes

  • Vehicle access into the old town is restricted, so expect to walk from a car park or drop-off point. Wear comfortable shoes and carry dress shoes if you need them.
  • Ancient paving is uneven and can be slippery; long dresses and heels need care.
  • Light, breathable fabrics photograph better in the heat than heavy ones. Solid colours stand out against pale stone.
  • For families, schedule around nap and meal times and keep the session short. Forty-five focused minutes usually beats two tired hours.
  • Drone flights in Türkiye require registration and permission, and extra restrictions may apply over archaeological areas. Leave this to a pilot who handles the paperwork.

Booking a photographer in Side

Photographers who work in Side are often based in Manavgat, Alanya or Antalya, and many also shoot for hotels. When you compare them, ask to see a full gallery from a real engagement or family session, not only the best ten frames. Check that the style is consistent and that people look comfortable.

Agree the basics in writing: date and start time, duration, locations, number of edited images, delivery time, and the total cost including any travel fee. Ask how rescheduling works if the weather turns or a child is unwell, and whether the photographer will arrange any permissions needed. If you are staying at a resort, find out whether it allows outside photographers on its grounds and beach.
